Highland Community Waste Partnership

About this Fund:

The Highland Community Waste Partnership is led and driven by eight community groups across the Highlands, coordinated by Keep Scotland Beautiful.

Together we are working to reduce waste in our communities by changing the way that we all consume, that is, buy, use and dispose of things.

This means using things better, for longer, reducing the impact of waste on our communities and working together to make the most of what we’ve got.

This will help cut costs, grow local, grassroots initiatives and transform the way we live to reduce our environmental impact.

The project began in early 2022 with an aim to complete in 2025.
During this time, the Lairg & District Learning Centre have put on well over 100+ workshops and events to audiences across Sutherland; our classes have all been based on a reduce, re-use, recycle premise, hoping to raise awareness in our area and help people to ‘do their bit’ for the environment.
Our classes have consisted of Sewing, Knitting, Wool Weaving, Willow Weaving, Litter Picks, Zero Waste Food Workshops, Films and ‘Cook-offs’, Clothing Repairs, Woodworking, Tetra Pak Printing, Crafts for all ages from recycled materials, Foraging, Composting and Gardening, Talks, and many more.

Between 2022-25, LDLC tutors have diverted over 2000kg of waste from going to landfill:
Food waste – 253kg
Textiles – 56kg
Wood – 700kg
Garden waste – 100kg
Other craft materials34kg
Through our Composting and Food Waste workshops from 2022-25, we have managed to put about 980kg of waste into composters and will have generated around 200kg of compost from people putting what they’ve learnt into action.
Maker’s Space (not all items recorded) and other workshops, the amount of items we have repaired has been around 65 pieces, and 228 items have been re-used.

As the project comes to a close in March 2025, we aim to keep some resources available for interested parties to view at their leisure.
The Highland Repair Directory will also still be available to access here.

We also have plenty of  Resources available for people interested in online learning – including woodworking, sewing, composting and others.

Scottish Government – Climate Engagement Fund

Flight Path

Along with 8 other centres throughout Scotland, LDLC are delighted to have been awarded a grant from the Scottish Government’s £272k Climate Engagement Fund (CEF).

The fund has been set up to increase Climate Change awareness and action in local communities through various activities such as community workshops, podcasts and green festivals, which will be supported from the latest round of Scottish Government funding.

We are using the funding from CEF to launch a new project which will raise awareness about the impact of climate change on the migratory patterns and behaviours of birds.
These will be held at the Lairg & District Learning Centre, as well as other local hubs arounds Sutherland. Participants will be able to explore the various ways in which changing environmental conditions, such as temperature shifts and habitat loss, are affecting the ability of birds to navigate their traditional migration routes.
Through a combination of creative writing workshops, lectures, immersive walks and various mediums of art, we hope that attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of how climate change is altering the behaviour and distribution of bird species worldwide.
We also intend to run a few local side projects to encourage families and youngsters to take an interest in the feathered friends that surround us, including informative talks and some of the birds from Blue Highlands Bird Rescue.
Keep an eye on our Events page for classes/workshops during 2024-25.
